 Amber is a lovely stone that's cut and polished and used as a valuable gemstone. It is extraordinarily light in weight which permits it to be employed in an enormous jewellery piece without pain. A fossil itself, it can contain many saved insects and other animals and plants that are many millions of years of age. These frequent fossil inclusions were made famous in the film "Jurassic Park".
The weird inclusions that are usually seen in amber sometimes add to amber's unique look and in several cases hugely increase its value. The sap oozed over the encircled animals and perhaps slipped to the ground and was later covered by dirt and waste. The sap later toughened and changed into a fossil.
The fossils are usually insects like gnats, flies, wasps, bees and ants. Sometimes more exotic insects are trapped in the amber like grasshoppers, preying mantises, beetles, moths, termites, butterflies, for example. Other non-insect animals are found in amber too like spiders, scorpions and even frogs and lizards. No actually giant animals like mammals or birds are seen in amber but feathers and fur have been seen. Useful plant remains have also been found in amber including flowers, mushroom caps, seeds, leaves, stems, pine needles and pine cones. The rarity of the besieged fossils controls the value of the amber much more than the standard of the amber. Remember these are fossils and aren't the same species that are alive today. Amber has seriously increased the understanding of the development of insects and plants as well as enlivening the interest in paleontology generally. Amber is usually imitated by plastics, colored glasses and some modern tree resins. Its hardness is mostly larger and it is harder than other resins. Its low density (amber can float on salt water) and inclusions can distinguish it from plastics and glasses.
