A talented diamond setter and jeweler will stop any of these directions from being in a position to be struck while mounted in a jewellery piece. As a gemstone, Diamond's single issue (perfect cleavage) is far outdistanced by the total of its positive qualities. It has got a broad color range, high refraction, high dispersion or fire, awfully low reactivity to chemicals, rarity, and naturally, intense toughness and durability.

Re it's physical properties, diamond is the final mineral in several ways: Hardness: Diamond is an ideal "10", outlining the head of the toughness scale, and by comprehensive measures 4 times harder than sapphire (which is nine on that scale). Clarity: Diamond is clear over a bigger range of wavelengths (from the ultraviolet into the far infrared) than is any other solid or liquid substance - nothing else even comes close. Melting Point: Diamond has the highest softening point (3820 degrees Kelvin) Tensile Strength: Diamond has highest tensile strength than any material. That doesn't quite interpret into the strongest rope or wire, as diamond has cleavage planes which support crack propagation. The strongest ropes can probably be made from another material, carbon nanotubes, as they should not suffer with the results of cracks and break. Still, if a long, thin, perfect crystal of diamond might be made, it might offer the highest possible pulling strength (in a straight line - don't try and tie it in a knot) Compressive Strength: It's the material that scientists use to make the best pressures when testing matter. The rare metal Osmium has just been demonstrated to be even less compressible (though it's not as tough as diamond). The bulk modulus of the metal osmium has just been discovered to be 476 GPa, about 7% larger than diamond. Diamond is a polymorph of the part carbon. Another polymorph is Graphite. The 2 share similar chemistry, carbon, but has totally different structures and properties. Diamond is a brilliant electric insulator ; Graphite is a good conductor of electricity. Diamond is the final abrasive, Graphite is a particularly good lubricator. Diamond is clear, Graphite is opaque. Sort of a shock is that at surface temperatures and pressures, Graphite is the stable form of carbon. Actually, all diamonds at or close to the surface of the Earth are at present going through an alteration into Graphite. This reaction, luckily, is very slow. |
